Tuesday morning, we set out on a 2-day excursion to the Highlands. First stop was Ben Nevis, the hightest mountain in Great Britain. Due to a time constraint (yeah, right), we decided to take a convenient gondola to the top and back down.

Along the way, we watched mountain bikers race and tumble down a twisty path. There was a lot of tumbling.
Next, we drove north along a series of lochs (lakes), enjoying beautiful scenery and sights along the way.

Of course, we also had to stop at the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre for some local culture.
We continued on, past Inverness with its neverending roundabouts, to our accommodations for the night: Carbisdale Castle youth hostel.

Wednesday morning, we headed back 'home'. On the way, we stopped along a firth (bay)...
and then had a short visit at Blair Castle.
The girls found another playground,
an old church,
and a beautiful, but locked garden.
That, in a nutshell, was our week. We felt like we saw a good bit of the country without getting too overwhelmed and exhausted. Having a comfortable base and friends to come back to every night (but the one!) made it even more enjoyable.
