Congressional Award Gold Medal; June 19, 2008

After a few years of hard work, Matthew was awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal. Read about the program at http://www.congressionalaward.org/. The program includes efforts in volunteerism, physical fitness, and personal development, as well as an element of leadership and/or an out-of-comfort zone experience. The bronze and silver medals were mailed (as Matt chose) or presented in one's state capital. The gold medals are awarded in a ceremony (actually two this year due to the number of participants) in D.C. and presented by one's US Senator or Congressman. Almost 240 medals were awarded in 2008. We guessed that approximately 150-180 came to D.C. for the ceremony.

The five of us before the ceremony.

My dad, Gene Conner, was there as well.
The official picture.
Mine. The professional photographer had a better camera, you think?
Tony's mom, Barbara Pierson, drove up to be there too.

Matt and Granddad.

Matt and Dad.

Matt waiting patiently for the endless photography session to begin.

Smile pretty!

Many photos were taken of subsets within the gold medal recipients group--Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc. NJ was the most represented state with 24 NJ students receiving the award this year, so they were a subset of their own.

These are the homeschooled students.

We're pretty proud of him and look forward to watching Nick and Samantha receive the gold medal as well.
